IAH - Groundwater in the Sydney Basin - Symposium
| Sydney | Tuesday 4th Aug 09 – Wednesday 5th Aug 09 |
Conference Convenor
The NSW Chapter of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) is convening a symposium on Groundwater in the Sydney Basin. The Symposium has been prompted by a great deal of recent activity at an investigation and policy level that is happening within the Sydney basin due to drought and conflicting water uses.
Why now
|
Deadline for full paper submission extended to Wednesday 10th June. Please note that the 6 page restriction on paper length can be relaxed to 8-10 pages. |
Interest and investment in groundwater resources has signficantly increased across the Sydney Basin from the Hunter to the Illawarra areas, as growing urban areas seek to secure and protect future water supplies. Pressure on the groundwater resources of the Sydney Basin will increase as the population of Sydney and its surrounds expands from 4 million to an estimated 6 million over the next three decades. As Sydney expands there will be conflict between the protection of groundwater for Sydney’s drinking water supply and the extraction of groundwater during coal mining operations which our water legislators will need to address. This event will highlight our growing understanding of groundwater resources in the porous and fractured rocks of the Sydney Basin, by providing a forum to bring together the considerable body of research and investigation performed by various universities, consultants and government agencies active in this area.
Symposium Delegates will
- Benchmark themselves against best practice in the groundwater industry
- Hear from government regulators and policy developers on standards and obligations for the management of groundwater and dependent ecosystems
- Gain insight into the challenges facing extractive industries with regards to stewardship of groundwater resources.
- Explore case studies and innovative strategies employed to quantify whether or not groundwater is connected to other water bodies.
- See how the latest research techniques increase confidence in understanding complex processes and natural variability
- Network with a variety of industry, consulting, academic and government representatives
The themes that will be covered are groundwater related
- Mine water and dewatering
- Groundwater resources characterisation
- Surface-groundwater interaction
- Ecohydrology and Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems
- Salinity
Further details including a full conference programme will be available in due course.
